The annual Pine Island Cheese Festival started in September 1936 and was held annually through 1940 until World War II interrupted. When the festival was reborn in 1949, it switched to a weekend in June. Since then, the cheese festival has been the opening festival of summer in southeastern Minnesota.
The annual festival is held the first weekend in June at Trailhead Park. It is free for the whole family and includes a carnival, arts and crafts show, food booths, tractor pull and the festival parade on Sunday.
